President of the Women Parliamentarians’ Forum, Saroja Savithri said there is a need to prepare amendments to establish a uniform age limit for marriage under the various marriage laws currently in force in Sri Lanka.
Saroja Savithri raised this topic during a meeting held in Parliament.
The meeting was attended by the Forum’s Deputy Co-Chairpersons, Member of Parliament and Attorney-at-Law Chamindrani Kiriella and MP Samanmali Gunasinghe.
During the discussion, the Women Parliamentarians’ Forum agreed to focus on drafting the necessary amendments to harmonise the existing marriage age limits. It was proposed to seek inputs from civil society organisations and other relevant stakeholders to develop final recommendations through the Forum.
Additionally, the Forum also discussed making amendments to provide a clear and accurate definition of the term “child.”
