Over 300 roads repaired, 14 more to be restored – RDA Director General K. W. Kandambi

The Road Development Authority (RDA) Director General K. W. Kandambi stated that 302 roads damaged due to floods and landslides in several parts of the island during the recent adverse weather, have now been opened for traffic and the remaining 14 roads are currently being urgently repaired.

He was speaking at a media briefing yesterday, the Director General further said that the 14 roads currently being repaired have been severely damaged. Of these, nine roads are in the Central Province, two in the Uva Province, two in the Northern Province and one in the Northwestern Province. In the Central Province, the Peradeniya – Rikillagaskada Road, Galaha – Delpitiya Road, Nawalapitiya – Dolosbage Road, Matale – Illukkumbura – Laggala Road, Kalalpitiya – Ukuwela – Elkaduwa Road, Moragahakanda – Wellawa Road, Gonboruoya – Balapokuna Road, Kandehandiya – Adikaramgoda – Loggaloya Road, and Ramboda – Pusulpitiya Road are under development.”

“In addition, the Randapola – Ambewela Road and the Demodara – Spring Valley Road in the Uva Province will be made ready for traffic within 10 days. A Bailey bridge has to be installed on the damaged Nainamadu – Iranawila road in the North Western Province. The Road Development Authority and the Sri Lanka Army are jointly constructing two new bridges for Mullaitivu – Kokilai – Nayaru in the Northern Province. Similarly, a Bailey bridge is proposed to be constructed on the Paranthan – Karachchi – Mulakivu Road. Under this programme, which is implemented as a short-, medium- and long-term programme, all necessary measures are being taken to restore the country’s entire transportation system to its previous state,” he said.

The Director General said, “Of these, the Peradeniya – Rikillagaskada Road is expected to be completed within 10 days, while the Matale – Illukkumbura – Laggala Road is expected to be completed in three weeks.

Since the Kalalpitiya – Ukuwela – Elkaduwa Road has been severely damaged, a new road section has to be added to it. Land acquisition is required for this. Similarly, a bridge has to be constructed on the Moragahakanda – Wellawa Road.
