Minister of Foreign Affairs Proposes EV Charging Stations as Chinese Assistance
Minister of Foreign Affairs Vijitha Herath has proposed that China support Sri Lanka by installing electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across the country, in view of Sri Lanka’s plans to import electric vehicles in large numbers, including from China. He noted that such assistance would be especially important as the government also intends to expand the import of electric buses in the future.
The proposal was made during a meeting with Chinese Ambassador Qi Zhenhong at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs yesterday (29). The Ambassador responded positively and agreed to convey the proposal to the Chinese government.
During the meeting, Minister Herath also requested urgent Chinese assistance to reconstruct railway lines and bridges damaged by the recent floods. Ambassador Qi Zhenhong agreed to immediately bring this request to the attention of the Chinese government.
Additionally, the Ambassador stated that he hopes to assess the damage caused by Cyclone Ditva and discuss with the Chinese government the forms of assistance that could be provided to Sri Lanka across multiple sectors.
