The primary objective of the Prajashakthi National Movement is not only to economically empower the people, but also to strengthen their education and health, thereby building a developed and resilient human community – Minister of Rural Development, Social Security and Community Empowerment, Dr. Upali Pannilage
Minister of Rural Development, Social Security and Community Empowerment Dr. Upali Pannilage stated that the primary objective of the “Prajashakthi” National Movement is not merely to economically empower the people, but also to strengthen education and health, thereby building a developed and resilient human community.
The Minister made these remarks while addressing an awareness program for Chairpersons and Secretaries of Community Development Councils of the Western Province, held yesterday (13) at the Temple Trees.
The programme was organized by the Prajashakthi National Movement, which was initiated by the government with the objective of eradicating poverty and ensuring economic justice through social empowerment. Community development representatives from the Colombo, Gampaha, and Kalutara districts participated in the event.
Elaborating further, the Minister stated that the Prajashakthi National Movement does not define prosperity solely in economic terms. He emphasized that its primary focus is the eradication of multidimensional poverty.
He explained that multidimensional poverty is measured using three key indicators, living standards, education and health. Therefore, poverty eradication goes beyond economic upliftment and also requires social empowerment. While strengthening the national economy, it is equally essential to improve the health and education standards of the people. The Minister stressed that the country cannot move forward without developing its human capital, highlighting the vital role of education and the need to nurture a healthy population for sustainable national development. Accordingly, he reaffirmed that the elimination of multidimensional poverty remains the core objective of the Prajashakthi National Movement.
Senior Additional Secretary to the President Kapila Janaka Bandara also addressed the gathering and provided a detailed explanation of the technical aspects essential for the effective implementation of the Prajashakthi programme.
He further outlined the procedures to be followed by Community Development Councils, the importance of preparing an integrated village development plan that reflects the proposals and views of the entire community, the correct identification of projects and the scientific prioritisation of development initiatives.
