Karu Jayasuriya Condemns Gaza Violence, Urges Global Action
Sri Lanka’s former Speaker Karu Jayasuriya has welcomed the Iran–Israel ceasefire but warned against complacency, highlighting continued atrocities in Gaza. In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), Jayasuriya has condemned the “subhuman treatment and indiscriminate killing” of Palestinians by Israeli forces, calling it “not a war, but ethnic cleansing.” He urged world leaders, parliaments, communities, and individuals to act urgently and at all levels to end what he described as “barbarism.”
The tweet said: “The Iran–Israel ceasefire brings relief, but it must not breed complacency. In Gaza, subhuman treatment and indiscriminate killing of people still continues unhindered. It is not a war, it’s ethnic cleansing. From world leaders to national parliaments, communities and individuals must force at all levels possible to end the current barbarism unleashed in Gaza.” (https://x.com/KaruOnline/status/1938131982732693956)
Jayasuriya’s remarks add to a chorus of international voices demanding accountability and immediate humanitarian relief. He emphasized that silence in the face of such brutality is complicity, urging moral courage and political will.
As Al Jazeera reported on Tuesday (01 July), further 95 Palestinians were killed in Israeli attacks throughout Gaza, including more than a dozen desperate people seeking food at US-Israel-backed aid distribution sites. Thousands of babies could die as a result of baby formula supplies running dry under Israel’s blockade, according to doctors in Gaza.
