The deep depression in the Bay of Bengal to the southeast of Sri Lanka (currently 02:00 p.m. located about 250 km southeast of Pottuvil) is very likely to move west-northwestwards across southwest Bay of Bengal and cross Sri Lanka coast between Hambantota and Kalmunai between 5.30 p.m. to 11.30 p.m. of tomorrow, the 9th January 2026.
Cloudy skies can be expected over most parts of the island.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in Northern, North-central, Eastern, Uva, Central, North-western and Southern provinces.

Showers or thundershowers may occur at several places elsewhere.
Very Heavy falls above 150 mm are likely at some places in Eastern province and in Mullaittivu, Vavuniya, Kilinochchi, and Polonnaruwa districts. Heavy falls above 100 mm are likely at some places in Uva province and in Nuwara-Eliya, Matale and Mannar districts.

Very strong winds at times about (50-60) kmph and gusting up to 70 kmph can be expected at times over Eastern slopes of the central hills, Northern, North-central, North-western, Central, Uva, Eastern and Southern provinces and in Gampaha and Colombo districts.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
