Si Lanka’s hopes of going to the Super Eight of the ninth edition of the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup were good as over after heavy rains caused their third fixture of Group D against Nepal to be abandoned at Lauderhill.

With just the 1 point and the remaining game against Netherlands carrying just the 2 points in the eventuality the former world champions win that would give them a mere 3 points the lid was literally shut on Wanindu Hasaranga’s team. Lanka, and even though it got light very late, it was too little too late. Nepal earn their first points as a result, so do Sri Lanka.

The far remote chances for Sri Lanka to now qualify leaves them needing the Bangladesh vs Netherlands fixture on June 13 in Kingstown to be a washout while they need to defeat Netherlands on June 16. Such an outside theory to work also leaves the Lankans hoping that South Africa beat Nepal by a big margin on June 14, and then for Nepal to beat Bangladesh by a small margin on June 16.

Meanwhile, visuals showed Lankan Head Coach, Chris Silverwood talking to the umpires and the Nepal players and thanking their enthusiastic fans for turning up. This result also confirmed South Africa to be the first team to make it into the Super Eights.
